FAQS

Where does the camp take place?

The Intro to Swim & Dive camp is taking place at the Anderson Aquatic Center at Cal Poly. You can enter using the side gate, next to the beach volleyball courts.

Where should we park to get to the pool?

Parking can be tricky on campus. We suggest parking in the main parking structure (Grand Avenue Parking Structure) or side lots off Longview Lane. Important to note, all participants should still follow Cal Poly's parking policies and obtain permits as needed.

What should we expect from the camp?

We designed this camp for young athletes (ages 7-12) to learn the fundamentals of BOTH swimming and diving. Each practice will include a 15 minute warm up with approximately 45 minutes of swimming (with PUMA coaches) and 45 minutes of diving (with CCDC coaches). There will be a 10-15 minute break between sports as needed.

SWIMMING: The swimming portion of this clinic will focus on proper body position, efficiency, breathing, and timing. We will learn/practice each stroke and introduce the fundamentals of flip turns, open turns and race dives.

DIVING: The diving portion of this clinic will focus on basic skills and proper progressions required for each diving category. We will focus on proper hurdles and entries and learn how to safely dive, flip and twist in various directions!

Are there any skill requirements for athletes?

Athletes should be able to swim half the length of the pool and should be comfortable at least floating on their back. It is also very important that a swimmer be comfortable in the water without a parent.

My son/daughter has a sibling younger than 7 or older than 12 who wants to join. Can they?

The clinic is designed for ages 7-12. However, we are open to making exceptions on a case by case basis if there is room and will not disrupt the goals of the clinic. Please reach out to Jud or Laurel to discuss.

What do we need to bring to practice?

Athletes need to have a swimsuit, goggles, and a towel. There are no restrooms on deck (short walk away), so athletes should arrive with their suit on, underneath their clothes.  A warm coat or swim parka is recommended as little ones can easily get cold getting out of the pool.

How do we sign up for AAU?

Our team will register for you. Please be aware there is a one-time $20 registration fee, which is good through the summer.

Why do we need to sign up with AAU?

AAU membership includes sports accident insurance coverage and is required to participate in youth activities on Cal Poly's campus

Can adults stay to watch the camp?

Parent's are more than welcome to stay to watch, however there is limited seating on deck so you may want to bring your own chair/ something to sit on.

What happens at the end of the camp?

The camp is designed to be a one week swim and dive crash course and we hope that it peaks an interest in one (or both!) sports. After the conclusion of the camp, both programs (Puma Acquatics and Central Coast Diving Club) have options for year-round participation that athletes to join. We hope to offer more swimming and diving camps later in the summer if there is interest, so be on the look-out!
